Only if plasma fans are hoarding them. Public ignorance (and not caring about the best PQ) along with Best Buy sales lackeys pushing the warehouse full of "LED" tv's is what killed plasma..

Yeah it pretty much is.

Plasma doesn't demo well in super brightly lit shopping centers, has less operating hours, and puts out heat/sucks up energy. The contrast is amazing however, and the refresh is unbeatable. Last gen plasma had very long life - more than enough before you upgrade in several years, and power consumption isnt really that bad, just that LEDs use ridiculously low amounts.

Plasma requires a proper viewing environment, so a reasonably or dimly lit room. They don't put out a ton of their own light, and instead rely on reflecting ambient light so they look washed out when they are under 10,000 watts of HID lighting in costco. Once you bring it home though

Panny was the best from what ive read, so i got one and it looks better than my roommates toshiba OLED and my friend's samsung LED, also shitload better than my old 41" samsung LCD.

umm where do you get that? It's hard to believe.

Yeah it's twice as much across all sizes looks like, but still very acceptable. Considering the quality it's well worth it.

not really. I actually started looking for a decent plasma. The problem is that I don't run a cable box in my garage, so I watch non-HD channels out there. If the plasma has a QWAM tuner or whatever the hell they're called, would I be able to pull hi-def channels straight from the coax? If so I think I'm going to put this on my list to do.

*QAM tuner, and if the tv doesn't have one, you can buy a standalone box that will do the same..

edit- but you'll only get whatever is available over the air free in your area, (stuff cable companies can't block) but you won't have to futz with adjusting an antenna.

OK, so QAM is over the air. So basically unless I rent a cable box from my cable co. , I can't get all the HD channels they provide? Grr. I already pay almost 200 a month to these bastards. I'm sure the box rental is another 20 bux a month or whatever.

Yes and no, it pulls in the OTA stations available in your area but through your cable provider. Sometimes cable co's accidentally leave additional channels unscrambled, but it usually doesn't last very long. I have quite a bit of QAM experience from the early aughts, just out of school and still poor.

edit- for example in my area (DFW) there are 28 free over the air channels, of course most will be crap..

Yeah I run a Mohu Leaf on my TV on the back porch and it picks up about 7 channels. It's crystal clear but still pixelates in weird weather or heavy movement on my back porch. I'll call Cox and see how much they want to bend me over for a 3rd box.

*Fun fact: You can just order up cable interwebs without tv and still get the free unscrambled channels with a QAM tuner.

* Don't know if this is with all cable providers, and in the 10+ years since I've tried it, they may successfully lobbied to scramble HD locals without a box

iirc Cox charges $10 per box and $15 if it's a DVR, but ihaven't had Cox in a long time. Been on DTV for several years, they have roughly the same pricing structure

Well the kicker is that I'm worried about the ambient light comments. I'm in my garage a lot during my off days and even at 5:30 when I get ogg, the amount of light entering my garage still washes out my Rear Projection, and it's stuffed as far back in the corner as possible. Now I know plasma has to have better brightness and contrast ratios than my 12 year old TV, but would I be better off moving my 61" DLP to the garage and then bucking up for a 70+ inch or whatever the giant size these days is LED TV for my living room?
