You know, i know all these books are really pretty specific, but as an amateur dSLR photographer, I really found a lot of "basic" help in a book entitled The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby.
http://www.kelbytraining.com/?page=books I picked it up used on amazon for 8 bucks, and the amount of information here has really helped develop some of my shots. He also goes through a list of NECESSARY accessories. His list is nowhere near complete, but it covers the basics in three groups, cheap, medium, and hella expensive. He runs you through canon and nikon cameras, and it works well with my xti. |

Mastering Composition with your DSLR
I like it because it addresses DSLRs specifically, pros and cons of them and how to learn to be effective with them. It also focuses on technique a lot more than it does on "how to Photochop your pics to look great."
