My BMW 330 progress thread.

After being fed up with the MKV GTI's ever growing repair/maintenance costs, and just general unhappiness with the FWD/computerization of it, I wanted something more fun to drive, servicable for a few years as a DD and could turn into a project/track/sunday car in a bit.

Picked this up July 1st from a local Autocross guy, he found a 330 ZHP without a moonroof and low miles so he was looking to sell this. Needed a few things, had 129,000 miles but lots of new parts, paid less than $7k after taxes.

2001 330i titanium silver,
Sport package
manual 5 speed
moonroof.

OEM wheels are staggered, and I've got two sets swapped around into (4) wide and (4) narrow sets. Summer/wide wheels have 255 star specs, and the winters have some new Blizzak WS-50's I found locally someone had put on a car they never drove in winter.

Spent the first month or two doing lots of small repairs here and there, taking things off and refitting them, like missing trunk trim/clips, serious detailing, etc. Swapped out exhaust hangers to fix a broken one causing a pretty bad rattle on clutch takeup, etc.

Day I got home with it:

Then started cleanup...

Did some rust repair (a few bad shots in the dark garage, most are from iPhone)

After buildup/sanding of primer, found a local store that mixes PPG paints into spray cans.

Time/experience were against me at first. I was listening to my dad too much based on a nice repair he did last year on the parent's Yukon, but he was constrained in area to work on. I was pissed the paint didn't match as well as I hoped...

Talked to some forum friends who do auto body, and changed my technique. Final paint with some feathering techniques i'm pretty happy for my 2nd time ever doing body work in a garage without a real gun.

Jealous. I keep eyeing some e36 is' for around 5k but am afraid of the maintenance cost associated with a car that's 13 years old...and a bmw

But still...jealous

New control arms and poly urethane bushings upfront. Rears have M3 arms with limiters from the previous owner.

Chilled the CABs to help with installation.

E46 headlamps are deseigned to pull apart, so I did some refinishing and trim painting.

Some grills, and smoked corner/side markers later:

Painted the new fog light surrounds to match

Had to get ready for winter...... Rubber mats and the Blizzaks going on...

255 vs 235

This never happened in the GTI.... For some reason the snow sticks to the sides of tires a lot in the back

That's a great car for a good price and you cleaned her up really well - good job. I love my e36 to death, and given the rarity of clean e30s I'm looking at e46s for a daily/commuter. Such a good price point right now. 330ci would be dreamy, but i'll take a 325 any day.

Nice job cleaning it up! That would be a totally awesome winter car with those blizzaks.

I looked extensively for a 330i/ci but they go for quite a premium unless they hit 150k+ miles which is way beyond my mileage preference.
