So pretty much wait on the 3-series for another year. What about Mercedes? I mean they are the predominant luxury manufacturer besides Bentley and Rolls Royce. The things can go 10,000 miles before any maintenance including oil changes.

Honestly I do believe the only thing to do is to go on a magic adventure of test drives. I just hate dealing with dealers. Why can't car buying be easy? Anyone have any experience with truecar.com and their true price?

You want cheap easy maintenance, and you're talking about a benz?

Half his list dismisses that point. Either he has an odd definition of cheap or he's full of shit.

None of the '07 Rav4s came in 2 door.

Yeah, I meant when the model first came out to the US there was a two door version. Like in '98.

I thought that if it went 10,000 miles without service it was would be easy to maintain. I guess not.

Well with BMW they have full maintenance for like 4 years and you can go up to 8. I would do that as I did with my wife's Toyota.

So you've got 4 doors already. You've just got the itch. Learn to live with what you've got.

Dude, his OP said

" The issue is that I want something fancier, something with better shocks, leather, cheap/easy maintenance, automatic, 4 doors as I will soon have a child, and of course safe. It would be cool if it had AWD or 4WD. Oh and it has to have Navigation. "

Yeah, the car he has now is perfectly adequate, but he wants something fancier. Last time I checked, this wasn't Financial[M]ayhem. It's our job to make sure he picks the right car; not to determine whether or not he needs one. You don't "need" that Infiniti M; you bought it because you wanted something nicer than a Maxima.

If you want size, the 3 series is tiny. I just (literally yesterday) bought a brand new 2011 328Xi Sedan to replace my 2011 Fusion. The fusion is an okay car- I just wanted an upgrade, and I could afford it.

There is also a pretty wide range of prices you listed. You can get a Fusion with Nav for probably 25 or so, but my 328Xi with nav just ran me 45 (sticker, not cost.) The Q5/Q7 are going to be 50+ if you want them decently equipped, and the X5 is going to be astronomical if you want anything in it. If you don't mind spending 50k+, the Q5 is an unbelievable vehicle- drives well, huge, great features- perfect if you want that. I'd definitely go with that over an exploder or something like that. From what I understand, the TSX has quality issues but the TL is pretty nice- not sure I'd pick one over a 3 series though.

In your price range, though, I think a 5 series would probably be a better fit if you're not looking for the space of a CUV/SUV

Wife and I picked up our Q5 for $48k + tax/tags fully optioned (Premium+ with Nav, upgraded wheels, and B&O stereo) in the 2.0T.

The only way they get really expensive is you go for the 3.2 engine fully optioned, and we didn't need that shit. Of course, what does piss me off is that certain things, like the s-line exterior package, lane assist, and adaptive headlights, aren't available unless you get the 3.2 engine. But, I really didn't want that engine. Though I was willing to settle for it until they found me the 2.0T fully optioned and then jumped on that instead.

It's just that he then goes on to suggest a whole slew of high dollar German shit that's going to well and thoroughly violate the "cheap/easy maintenance" part of that equation.

Let's face it: if he already thinks that his beige Toyota is no longer in the cheap/easy maintenance category, he's got a rude awakening coming.

Which Fusion did you have? Thoughts on comparison.

I agre with Rxn. The 3 series is pretty small, in comparison to some of the larger cars you mentioned. I have driven the 5 series a few years ago, I think it was the 550 or thereabouts. I really really liked that car.

Mercs had some serious issues while migrating the manufacturing to mexico. The low end mercs are soft, boring womanly cars that suffer in the reliability department. Someone I know who works as a mechanic at a dealer in OC warns not to buy them. The baller mercs are still decent but probably way beyond your budget or needs.

A 5 series is a good idea if he needs more space, but a 4 door 3 series really is okay for putting a child seat in the back. Kids are small anyhow.

Don't lump all the "german shit" together. A 3 series is not exactly high dollar - and is a standard in reliability. Personally i would get a 2010/2011, save a couple bucks and avoid the whole new turbo engine question.

German doesn't mean less reliable: Your z32 is chinkanese and yet a quick search will reveal the tip of the iceberg that is your repair threads.
