I've only been hassled twice for it in 20 years and 5 rides with 5 to 10% all the way around. I think Florida is pretty lax about it.

Yeah, but that shop is still taking a big risk in doing that, as taking you in as a cash job is no more legal than tinting darker than legal is. In fact, it's a lot worse. The risk of getting caught in either case isn't all that great, so many shops do it, but it's foolish to completely dismiss the risk to the shop in either case.

Lol really? Maybe in whatever backwater part of the world you're in. Here in Canada the shop does whatever you want. The way I see it (and thankfully the LEOs here do too) the shop ain't breaking the law, you are by driving around with illegally dark windows. Same as you could just walk into a muffler shop and get them to hack your exhaust off and straight pipe it. Couldn't the shop just as easily claim you said that you were gonna use the car for off-road/track use only or some like that?

To OP: I'd go darker than 50%. For the money it costs you'll want to at least get some benefit from having the tint. 50% won't do much on the 'keeping people out of your business' front. I generally don't even notice a car has tint until it's about 35%. 15% on the back will be fine for parking at night, especially if leave your side windows ~35% so you can see your mirrors. The police shouldn't hassle you for ~35% on the front windows, it's a pretty respectable tint amount. I have 5% all around and, while I don't necessarily regret it, on a rainy dark night I really can't see a fucking thing sometimes and parking can be straight awful. Also, the 2 tint tickets I've received in the month since I got the tint are a testament to the fact that cops are looking for it. The benefit is that people can't see a thing inside the car so I don't worry about people breaking into her. Out of sight, out of mind. Looks dope too.

Depends on shop, most will do whatever you want and let you deal with any possible tickets.

Bugger. I still don't really know what I want. Even worse, I just called the tint shop and they are scheduling for August 8. Ugh. Gotta find somebody else.

Got it done. 50% front, 15% everywhere else. Also bought a sun shield for the windshield. Loving it so far. Will post pics if folks are interested.

My G8 came with tint from the previous owner (I believe it is 35% all around), I likely would have gone darker if it weren't done but it is plenty adequate and helps a great deal with temps when parked outside.

I would suggest looking into ceramic tint instead of metallic tint. It is said it does a better job at keeping temps down and has no negative affects in regards to electrical equipment like cellular phones and GPS. They offer it in normal smoked tint shades but also have a clear ceramic tint that doesn't darken the windows but still provides the same level of heat rejection. The major benefit here is that you can use this film on the windshield without any legal ramifications.

Any shop will tint whatever you want, it's your money. The tint service we used was awesome. I called in the morning to see if we needed an appointment, but they said no. They called one of their installers and he just swung by our house in about an hour and a half, installed it in a matter of a couple hours, and then he was gone. The tint we used is just one step darker than street legal for all windows. It is barely noticeable unless you are holding up samples of both tints, so I really doubt that it will ever be an issue.

Huper Optik is the best tint. Tinting your front windshield isn't illegal, operating a motor vehicle on public streets with tinted front windshield is. Therefore shops are free to do whatever the customer pays for.

This is a false statement. I've been given a warning for tint in VA and I have TX plates. I know 2 people who have VA plates but have been ticketed for tint in MD.
