I think at one time, there was an argument for this that basically said that the cost of building a police-specific car with all the necessary equipment already installed is less than that of buying a Crown Vic and subsequently adding all the extra required equipment. I have a hard time believing that's possible with a completely unique chassis, body, interior, etc.

Clearly you didn't read the article.

The orders are already in, yes this thing is going to be sold at a price to compete with converted cop cars.

Looks like a step in the right direction to me, AND this thing is bad ass. Plenty of power to chase someone even if you already have a couple guys inside.

Also just because something is cool doesn't mean it can't be more efficient. This thing is both and it would make me want to become a cop more tbh

A black Tahoe with light rack and huge pushbar on front might be intimidating....that thing looks like it just rolled off the set of a B sci-fi movie.

yea i'd say so but honestly the heat evokes a reaction in any vehicle... nobody likes tickets

I was thinking a side effect of giving them a prius or something would lower their excitement levels during a chase and lead to less shootings of unarmed people

That would cause cops to use their weapons on themselves..

Not gonna happen.
Oddly enough, Checker Taxi owned that market for a while with a purpose-built taxi.

True, but Checker cabs used a Chevy drivetrain that could be worked on by any shadetree mechanic..

Obviously you didn't read the article, there was no mention of orders placed with the company. Yes, they signed a contract for the engines but that's it. The company say they will be priced comparatively with other out fitted cop cars but I can't see that happening with all of the extra shit and have the company remain above water.

Depends on the department. Some departments are really into the "community policing" thing. For exmaple the cars in my old home town were tricked out with LED light bars sometime in '00. Then they decided to go on this community policing kick around '03. Obviously the LED light bars are lower-profile than the old style bars and the older ones were thought of as more of a visual deterrant.

Unless you're some fuck-stick state patrol officer hiding in the bushes. letting people know there is cops around is actually a good idea. People are (usually) less likely to commit a crime in police presence.

I'm pretty sure what they mean by "competitive" is $5-10k more than a comparable GM, Ford or Chrysler offering but more "value" since it's a purpose built police vehicle with a lot of extras built in. I think it was a mistake going with the BMW diesel drivetrain...not because it isn't good...but some departments in smaller cities won't touch a car they can't get worked on at their usual mechanics.

That's even worse. A lot of police departments don't have a lot of extra budget. 5 to 10 more is gonna add up to another cruiser pretty quickly. I agree on the BMW engine too. Not a bad drive train but their regular mechanic isn't going to be well versed in BMW
Because I assume it'll have a BMW ecu and the machines to read those are not cheap in any sense of the word.
