HOLY FUCK I AM RETARDED

Awww shieeet RIP m3 v2.0

So i was on my way to class. Running a bit late, traffic is really bad then it went from bad to fucking stupid - gridlock for about half an hour. Some giant accident or something, I never even got to find out. After like 25 minutes of sitting still i saw my temp gauge at like 80% and the red warning light on. FUCK! Shut the engine off. Sit there for a while. Cars start crawling a couple feet. Fire it up, signal and merge like an asshole off the road. Take nearest exit, pull into an IHOP parking lot.

What now?

Turn car on, pop hood, fan isn't running. Short fan switch on side of radiator with a paper clip, it comes on no problem. Use toolkit screwdriver to open bleeder screw, nothing but steam. So the coolant went somewhere, and level is not high enough to trigger the temp switch, at the top of the rad.

Notice dried up coolant all around my lower hose where it goes on the radiator. Tightened it up. Let the steam out. Poured what i had worth of half empty water bottles in there. Waited a bit. Drove it home, watching the gauge - it crept up at stoplights but dropped as I moved.

Soooo im hoping that 1) I didnt obliterate the engine running it hot... BMWs are really tightly made with no room for shit like that, heat is the number one killer of these S52s 2) is tightening the hoses enough? i fucking hope so. There's no other obvious leaks. oil looks good, etc.

After I got home I added a lot more water. Now fan comes on like normal, it idled in my garage for like 10 minutes.

Still hoping there's no damage/warping/weakening/etc from running hot for that long. I have to leave at 8 am tomorrow, not a lot of time to work on it either....

what else should i do tonight to make sure it's good?

If it's running fine and everything else seems fine it's probably OK. I had a catastrophic overheating on my old SC (also from a fan not working.) It actually overheated to the point where the engine stopped running. But after the fan was fixed (actually... plugged back in ) it was fine and never gave a problem after that.

The main thing I would be concerned about is why did the fan decide to quit working?

You might be in the clear - can't hurt to see what's coming out the rear if anything. Put in an order for some BMW blue and get to mixing some coolant w/ distilled water.

Uhh, dude, no. Either change the coolant yourself or have it done. You've fucked your ratio of anti-freeze to water by not adding a proper mix. You probably also haven't changed your coolant in a few years, and that is a normal, routine maintenance thing.

You also need to find your coolant leak, I hope it isn't your head gasket.

Especially if you just put random bottled water in there, you should drain and flush the coolant. Fill it up with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and whatever the prescribed coolant is (I assume BMW blue fruity-smelling coolant).

Also, replace that leaking coolant hose.

Then drive it, and keep an eye on your coolant and oil. As long as you're not consuming them, and they're not mixing, you're probably fine.

Pfff. You can totally drive it with bottled water in there - it won't hurt anything.

Just don't leave the bottled water in there for months. The next time you have a few free hours, flush it with the proper coolant (which I'll admit, is a huge pain in the ass).

I assume the guy who he bought the car from, who he said "did all the mods you'd want to do to an E36 M" ... actually also performed the standard cooling system refresh, replacing decade old plastics with.. slightly newer plastics, water pump, fan, etc...

I feel like I am missing something... Years ago he had an M3, and was convinced BMW did such a good job his car would get zero gains from mods. I pointed out that for emissions, reliability, warranty, and noise, plus cost, there was plenty of room for improvement though cams, valves, porting, ect. I don't ever remember him swapping cars, and I swear it was the same color. I'm pretty confused.

my understanding of the situation is:

he (his parents whatever lol beef) bought an E36 M3 from CL

97 98 99 something, with 50-70k(?) on it... a few suspension mods, BPU's, various fixes and improvements, sway bar end links, bushings maybe.... I think this PO may have also done this OBD1 manifold swap and larger 3.5" MAF + intake but Im not sure.

he brings that up a lot, and I agree I need to do it but my car needs other shit first

the phrase was "its not dumb to buy the car pre-built, I paid a lil more yes but the previous owner did everything that you need to do to an M3" - - Which would HAVE to include a cooling system refresh which is MANDATORY for basically any secondhand BMW

That would most likely spell doom for an s52, sounds like the tburd engine is fairly resilient.

The fan switch is mounted high on the rad and when coolant gets low enough it doesn't trigger it. When i short the switch the fan works. it also works now after I filled the rad all the way. So i think it was just a matter of me not checking my coolant level for a long, long time. Some of it seeped out from the lower rad hose, i can see dried coolant there. I gave the clamp a few turns, hope that was it...
