Phillips ambilight LED...?

Looking to finally scrap my old CRT tv, and get a flat screen. Not watching much tv, usually movies, and i recently got an Asus Eee, which i want to use as media center.
Never liked the big brands like Sony, i prefer mid-range since i believe you get more for your money there instead of paying for the logo.
The phillips ambilights have always intrigued me a bit - it might just be a gimmick, but i think it adds some extra atmosphere and cozyness.

First one i stumbled over at a decent price was the Philips 42PFL7695H LED - but i realised technology has moved a bit forward, i don't even know what good the LED part is compared to LCD

Anyone got experience with ambilight?

Basically looking for a midrange 42" 1080p. It'll be spending most of it's time being hooked up to the Eee via HDMI, and i'll run the sound through my non-hdmi surround amp (just a Panasonic SA-HT540, nothing fancy)

I'll also be surfing the web, and using it as a monitor so image quality has to be pretty decent.

Never liked plasmas. but please school me about LED vs. LCD, and what other decent midrange brands to look for (Samsung are ok in my book, they make their own panels)

LED TVs/Monitors are still LCDs. the difference is that LEDs are the backlight instead of the old cold cathode fluorescent lights.

ah, sorry for using the term wrong - LED is clearly the way to go then, and i still must say ambilight looks sexy from the youtube vids

Yup, I've been waiting for something to come along that is truly better than plasma and it hasn't happened yet. LED backlights are a step forward...but it's still an LCD with viewing angle and fast motion issues.
