new receiver, no audio when playing video

So I got a new receiver (yamaha rx-v371) and i hook everything up via hdmi. uverse box and roku plugged in via hdmi. From receiver I have hdmi to dvi cable going to dell u2311h monitor (hdcp compliant on dvi input)

So when the monitor is on and displaying via dvi the sound stops playing on the receiver. When I turn off the monitor the sound on the receiver immediately starts playing.

basically with video on the sound is off. I've set the receiver to play sound through amp, amp +tv, and just tv. none make a difference. and obviously my monitor doesn't have speakers.

is this an hdcp issue or is this an ID10T error?

make sure audio passthrough is disabled on the output to your display. That's a very odd issue, as the monitor output shouldn't change when the receiver plays audio.

Alternatively, make sure the monitor output is in the correct zone.

will do. I plugged the cable into my other monitor and video and audio died, which I assume is because it isn't hdcp compliant.

here's the thing. The receiver plays the sound so I know it can. It's just that when the tv is on and it's outputing video the sound from the receiver stops as though it expects the tv (monitor) to play it.

I think there must be a setting I'm missing orrrrr the hdmi to dvi is tripping it up

Could it be an ARC(Audio Return) setting somewhere? I've had systems to stupid shit because of the ARC.
