So everyone who carries an olympic torch will be mugged.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjtRFyX1bmA

Ooh, look at that guy try to pull the torch away from that small woman. For a second there I thought he was going to try a flying dry hump or a boob grab. Mugging European style. Can't wait to see the torch mugging attempts in the US.

You'd figure Tibet could get some better muggers, most of the torchbearers are not even Chinese - most are atheletes. Can't wait to see a Tibetan show up at the games with a pack of dynamite strapped to his chest either.

No wonder China is in heavy crackdown mode.

What China is doing to Tibet is beyond heinous and disgusting. Tibetian Buddhists are totally non violent people, it is the religion (actually a philosophy) of compassion.

The Olympics are going to be in the headlines all summer for all the wrong reasons.

Just wait until China starts spying on, censoring, and expelling foreign journalists for covering the protests over the competition. It will be interesting to see how China reacts to such immense international scrutiny. God knows the protesters view the media attention as a golden opportunity. I wonder if the tanks will roll out again for this...

I've read a number of articles recently about how the Lamas used torture, maiming, etc as punishments. Not sure how valid that is, but raises some eyebrows.

Yeah. Either way, with China, Russia and Iran close trading partners... and us "westerners" competing with them for diminishing resources, this can easily spell the start of another "cold war" or worse scenario.

Are you really upset that some protesters who probably aren't even Tibetan messed up the torch run? Kinda sucks for the athletes I guess but things like this are pretty much the only way to get anyone to pay attention to what happened to Tibet. Considering the history of the Chinese occupation of Tibet so far I'd be pretty surprised if there's going to be much if any violent action by Tibetans.

Tibet was a theocratic feudal society before they where invaded by China and the Dali Lama/Buddhist hierarchy generally did whatever they deemed necessary to stay in power, which would I imagine include the usual tools of repression and intimidation. Offensive wars to spread Buddhism throughout South East Asia weren't uncommon during the history of Buddhist Tibet either, they certainly weren't some pacifist non-violent society like they're often portrayed. None of this really justifies China's invasion of course but the idea that Tibet was some sort of shangri-la is wrong.

Native Americans were pretty peaceful too. Look at what happened to them.

That Tibetans are still alive - Is perhaps a acknowledgement that China is much more tolerant than the US and Europe ever was. China could have easily wiped out Tibet in the late 1200's (about 300 years before the colonization of America, wiping out millions of Incans and Mayans)

Back then, during the mongolian wars - Tibet was perhaps the most militant of all the nations. A prejudice that China holds to this day (sort of like the British hold against the Irish)

Bah, if China leaves - The British will just move in like they did for 99 years with Hong Kong until 1997.

Free tibet - simply means free from China for many. Then it will be easier for Tibet to be under British Monarchal rule for 99 years.

What's fucked up, is the olympic committee is just fucking asking for trouble everytime round. Making olympic sport into a political pissing match is fucking retarded. Even the SA apartheid boycott was fucked up back in the day. The bottom line is, an athlete is an athlete. Nothing more, nothing less. Some idiots have been demanding the athletes boycott the games. Yeah, I'd do that too! Pretty much the most important competition in your life, you've trained for decades for, held every once in 4 years, and you make your livelihood off the fucking sport. Yeah I'll boycott it because the olympic committee is fucked up

They're actually fucking wondering about the health of some athletes like long distance runners, due to air pollution. Sounds to me like these olympics are going to be more about politics than sport.

There's forced emigration and all kinds of shit happening in China at the moment too it seems, and some people have been jailed for not having a fucking home because you wouldn't want the western whitie to see homeless people. Yeah, sounds like an ideal place to have the olympics in. Call me oldfashioned but I'd think the olympics should choose their venues on well ....the point that they can have one efficiently

Just on that note mate, Sydney did the same thing during 2000. We kicked out all the homeless bums anywhere remotely near Homebush so that particular part of Sydney didn't appear to be a shithole.

I'm for a free Tibet, but all the goofy Olympic protesting in Europe, US, etc is just another growing fad that's fed by the media. Unfortunately it's going to get a lot worse and make the Olympics look pretty sad before it's all over.

And I suspect a good number of the RP loonies will jump into this new fad (given they need something new to bitch about).
