$1000 range
nikon d80. Period. It's a d200, only smaller than the d70. So everybody wins. It comes out in October or september, I think edit: Am I going to be kicking myself when the d80s comes out a year later?

Is a refurbished camera anyhting to be afraid of? In my experience as long as its functions well, the outside looks are fine. My last camera got beat like crazy: scratches on outside, rolled with me down a big sand hill and got sand all over the internals and survived MANY drunken nights, yet it still kept going.
so will I be suffering any in quality or are most factory refurbs fine? |

probably not. secondhand gear is usually peachy.
it's a damn shame that you treat your equipment that way. anyone who puts cameras through such abuse should'nt have one, in my opinion. please take care of anything you do buy. in the meantime, i'll remember to avoid anything secondhand from Vancouver.

it happens... never to anything expensive. I buy everything with purpose in mind and that camera was bought with the assumption that such unspeakable things might/would happen to it. Besides, someone has to do the durability testing ![]() |

that's why they pay engineers to do it. that way they get detailed lab reports to substantiate their R&D budget.

Hay guys,
I'm looking to buy a camera but I honestly don't know where to start. I don't have an exact budget but I'm really just looking for my best value for best quality, although I don't want to break the bank. I either want something nice and portable that I can carry around in my pocket and take shots whenever, or a great DSLR and be dedicated to carrying it around in a bag but having much better image quality. I guess I'm mostly looking for a camera with good manual settings that I can take everywhere with me. Someone convince me. ![]() |

canon's P&S aren't what they used to be. at the higher end, they border on dSLR territory. 10D's with low shutter counts go for ~$500 nowadays. If you shoot outside a lot and can sacrifice speed for image quality, Fuji S3 Pro's can be had for $800. The 12.3 stops of dynamic range will help keep your skies from being overexposed.

The reviews aren't too nice on the S3.. Not too sure on the 10D... Not really looking for something in the middle.. either a great portable or a full SLR. F30/31 actually isn't that bad I guess for exposure as long as you set it manually? Hm. Just don't like the XD cards

Don't let the reviews sway you away from the S3. Which is more important to you, six really useful megapixels or 10 shit ones?
Scroll down to the interior shots with the windows and you'll see what I mean. http://www.noendpress.com/pvachier/cameras/fuji_S3.php The 10D is a very good camera for the money. It's not the smallest SLR for the money but it handles great and it'll leave you with money for glass.

As far as Nikons go, D50 is great at the cheap end and D80 is AWESOME. D70 isn't really worth eye-contact.
