I avoid Germans based on maintenance costs, but if you're copacetic with that, jog on.

I guess the way it seems to me is that, he's used to spending "take out a home equity loan"-scale money on the Lightning, so even a higher-end German car will probably seem relatively modest, compared to that.

For what it's worth, my girlfriend's dad has been driving a Mercedes E class of one vintage or another for like fifteen years, and the only thing he complains about is the repairs when something actually breaks out of warranty. The maintenance, if you keep up with it, doesn't appear to be all that bad, if you're well enough off to afford to buy the car in the first place.

If it's a straight up trade I'd probably do it as well, but I'd make it mostly a garage/weekend queen and have something else as a daily driver.

Nice looking car. Not sure it is worth a trade for the epic amount of effort and premium parts that you've poured into the Lightning to get it where it is. A quick look on eBay and KBB shows that the 2005 E55's go for anywhere between 17 and 27k, with minty-fresh and low miles being the high-side... it does have a lot of good (and expensive) modifications, but there is no mention of miles, which makes me think there are MANY of them. These cars demand a lot, many parts are costly but not all, work is a non-issue since you are more than capable of the demand and you may find yourself frustrated with the overly German nature of the car, regarding silly complexity that is just not necessary. Some times their engineering is wonderful though, offering logical methods to a need and great practicality in function.

If you feel okay with letting go of the truck, that is now running tip-top with ALL new parts for a 20-30k car; do it. It is obvious you are smitten by the E55, think long and hard about it up until this weekend. Drive the car that way you would if you owned it already, drive the truck immediately afterward and then give yourself another week to ponder it further without touching the truck. If you are still in want of the E55 and not missing the truck I would say the decision is clear.

What made you decide to get rid of the G8 too? Want to sell any of the aftermarket goodies? If you are serious about selling it, I'd be interested in trading my SLP Loudmouth exhaust for the SOLO's.

Screw the trade. Sell the Lightning, keep the G8 if you must. Or keep both, and keep the miles down in the L, and use it fairly gently for awhile, maybe win a few car shows.

Either way, stay faaaaarrrr awaaaaayyyy from that German kraut pit. The fucking GumballMorons car is a better car from a reliability and repairability standpoint, and might even get better mileage.

And if you need another hobby, take up strippers or mail-order child brides, or stamp collecting. But make it small and cheap for now. You've already got one of the most expensive hobbies (heavy drinking).

My sister's R350's air suspension, yes it's a minivan, collapsed at 65,000 miles. Cost her 5K to replace it at the dealership. Good luck

Dealer cost on the Air shocks is 1550 a piece. They are available for 800 a piece if you know where to look. I'm a pretty good wrench. This car doesn't scare me. Now, if the engine goes, well, time for a new car Might as well roll the dice, and besides, if I do kill the car, you guys can make even more fun of me. It's win-win for you!

I do want his plate though so I can mess with my buddy and his E39 M5

I KNEW you'd be the first to respond

I'm not getting the plate. I am thinking about doing a vanity one though. I'm not a fan of my current one, and the one on the Lightning doesn't really work with the Benz.

Oh snap.
That is a nice car, and would be a good trade really. Though I am REALLY disappointed to not see the potential of your WhiteFlightRide. I was really looking forward to some videos.

Though I am guilty as well... I sold off my un-finished 66 Fastback after years of sitting and not finishing.

Why not just keep the truck and have it as basically a garage queen? It's a quite a truck, and I'm sure you'd have fun taking it to shows and fucking around with it. I mean, you have your G8 for a driver. Why not get a car to replace just that? You could probably sell the G8, and I bet your friend would sell you the Merc for decent cash if he's bored with it and has all those other cars.

Not that I am big into vehicles that don't get used, but that's basically how my Miata was. It stayed in the garage, and I had fun waxing it. That's also how I got $7500 for a 20 year old car, guy didn't even care to hear it run once he laid eyes on it. Even my beat-up Civic get accused of being brand new - "Is that some new Fit Sport?"

Well I'm sure my friend will race it and turn it up, considering he runs his GT-R pretty much every week. I just know I'd never give the Lightning as much attention as it deserves because I'm just burnt out on working on it after all of these years. It's been my dream to have a quick 4 door "saloon", and even though the G8 is quick, it's nowhere near the level of this E55 in the speed or refined department. My buddy's car is gorgeous, inside and out, and it will be nice to have my pride and joy garaged, as right now the poor G8 has to sit outside as the Lightning stays comfy. It just seems like a good situation for both of us, and I'm sure I'll be seeing the truck around.

The end all place for air suspension...

Personally I'm a german whore(tex is foaming now) so I'd say yes 10 times over. The Lighting is a beast no doubt but a fickle thing it seems and honestly unless you abuse the shit out of the MB mechanically the engine/trans should be problem free if you do the proper maintenance.

The rest is true, european cars in general tend to eat themselves electronically after so long. You would certainly get tail in the MB albeit one night wham, bam, thank you mam. You however don't seem ready to settle down yet so I consider it a win
