Not flaming, just curious what you mean. Having a pet is cruelty? Or is this going up another level and talking about owning an animal?

the whole concept of having an animal for your amusement. like a person will say, cattle are kept in small cages and thats bad. while they walk their poodle around on a leash. these pets are a convenience to you, kind of like slaughter houses. i might be wording this wrongly but i hope its understandable

I understand what you're trying to say. I disagree, but I understand.

That's true for certain pets, but dogs and cats have been around humans for so long that they've adapted to being "pets," and I find it hard to see how keeping them in that role is cruel. Dogs and humans have been around each other for so long that we instinctively know how to communicate and have actually developed methods of doing so over the millenia.

Keeping something wild, like a parrot, I could understand viewing as cruelty.

You've also got to have the right dog/cat for your lifestyle, something most people don't do because they value aesthetics more. If you live on a farm, by all means get a high energy herding dog. If you live in an apartment or are fairly sedentary, get a more sedentary dog, not that Collie. I can easily see placing a dog in the wrong kind of situation as cruelty, but get 'em in the right situation and they love life.

never had a pet before have you? They're far from a convenience and yet people still go through the time, money and trouble of having one. Why, because they value the bond and friendship with their pets. They're more than pets, they're best friends and family. Almost everyone with a pet dog or cat has a special bond with them and when animal dies of old age or gets killed, the owner actually goes through a depression as s/he would for another person. Sometimes the depression goes on for years.

I can't help but believe that all animal rights people are spoiled and sheltered. They think the animals got it bad? Go live in a ghetto, live in a third world country, fight war in a foreign country, get beat down by your dad, watch your prostitute mom fuck a stranger, walk into your sister's room and see her hanging from the ceiling. Go through all that and tell me you still think that a dog with a roof over his head, free food, and unconditional love of his owner is a prisoner of human evil.

a very big mistake on my part. I interpreted your post completely wrong. I thought you were trying to convince others that owning a pet is cruelty. sorry about that.

I'm vegetarian, and I don't eat dead animal parts because I can't help but think about where the meat comes from. When I look at a hamburger patty, I imagine my own muscle tissues being cut out, ground up, and grilled to perfection. I realize that I'm thinking way too much about what meat is, but that's my reason for not eating it.

I have a hard time convincing people about my reasons for not eating meat. I end up telling them that I just don't like the thought of eating dead animals. Most people find my reasons are quite unsatisfying.

I usually end up embarassed for not eating meat, but I guess that's just life.

Don't be embarrassed if you don't eat meat but don't try to push it on anyone else.

Also, vegans are an evolutionary mistake.

When the shit hits the fan and all the animals are gone, guess what we're using as a food source.

Not really. Both dogs and cats have been living side by side with humans for thousands of years. They CAN survive in the wild, but their main niche in the ecosystem is structured around interaction with humans at this point. It's not coincidental that humans and dogs can communicate fairly well, we've been living together for so long that we've both evolved to be able to do so.

Dogs and humans especially have a pretty neat symbiotic relationship. Dogs obviously enjoy human interaction, nearly as much as they like being around other dogs.

A parrot, on the other hand, has just been yanked out of the wild and has no adaptation to living in captivity. They're smart as hell so they can deal with it, but it's not part of their genetic makeup like with dogs and cats.
