oh, and this is _hilarious_

show me some stats on the frequency of name-changes in boxing vs mma, and also show me that its often enough to merit it being pointed out.

THEN present that argument.

I remember some guy changing his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali. I think he was a boxer

More people do know Mixed Martial Arts then ever before, but that doesn't mean fights are going to be any different. Heck people aren't nearly as tough as they were even a few decades ago. We are in the age of the weak. People who complain to much and do nothing more than play video games and sit on the couch and watch tv. People need a huge reality check these days.

I know this thread is slightly old but I wanted to point out one bit of personal anecdotal evidence to support the op.

I have very little training in Brazilian Jujitsu, but I do know the basics. I got into a fight one night with a frat boy twice my size. Clearly just a basic swing as hard as he can hoping to hit kind of a person.

I let him swing blindly then came in very close wrapped my arms around him and somehow was able to bring him to the ground. Where I was able to put him in a guillotine (while him being much larger and on top of me) and the fight was over. He could do absolutely nothing.

This might not have made the most exciting fight but just goes to show even having some very basic knowledge of this stuff can turn the fight around.

its all bread and circuses......
the truly respecting members of martial arts or other self defense styles do not see beating the crap out of someone as a "sport" or "entertainment"....
hand to hand combat is the oldest form of warfare, used to invade others' homes or to protect their own, or as law enforcement.

the media has made a profitable "game" out of watching someone get pushed to the brink of death and at the end of the match either walk away on their own or get carried out by medics..... all to satisfy the mass' underlying blood-lust that has always been there but society has put a taboo on except in warfare and on the stage....
