I have the coolest garage in the neighborhood...New Toy Inside

Your camry and ford F150 ain't got nothin' on me!!! My '27 Ford has been getting lonely lately. Had a Ford Escape as a garage mate, but they just didn't have anything in common. The Escape is getting kind of old (not 85 years old like my 27, but old for new car standards) and was about time to think about replacing it. The wife wanted another Escape, but i didn't want to spend the money on one, so i posed the question - wouldn't you rather have your own classic car and keep the Escape as a secondary vehicle? We could find a good running driving sled for a lot cheaper than even a used Escape...we could gradually fix it up, you'd enjoy it a lot more, it would be more fun, a hellova lot cooler, and as the Escape's value plummets year over year, a classics value would go up year over year, especially as we fix it up.

She agreed, and i started looking - She wanted a sled, and was partial to 51-54 Chevy's - but leaned towards '51 and '52's more. Found a '51 the next day - went and looked at it, and gave the guy a deposit the day after to hold it until i could get money in line. 2 or 3 weeks later, and my '27 has a new little (big) sister.

Wife is a happy girl. Can barely keep her out of it...she even begged me to let her put the car in her name...even though I'm paying for it, but hey, i'm a nice guy.

Not sure how i managed to get an out of focus photo with a P&S camera, but i did.

The whole family: Wifes '51 Chevy, my '27 Ford, and my in-laws '49 Willys Jeepster

Needs a little work, but its running and driving. Wife has been all over metroplex with it since Friday night.

Must do's:
1) Has Nova front clip in it, and its a little wide for the car, tires rub on fenders in sharp turns - need to narrow a-frame

2) Little bit of rust in floor boards and trunk - easy fix

3) Rust on left door - bubbling through paint - not a vital repair yet

4) Rust on right rear quarter panel, also bubbling through paint, also not vital repair

5) Interior is in good condition...but can be nicer - needs white & seafoam green vinyl.

6) Driver door glass is cracked - cheap easy replacement

7) Thought it had carb problems, but turns out it was a timing problem, easy fix (done)

8) Needs new wiring - everything works, but looks like a rats nest.

9) Bag it!!!! Wanna lay frame.

10) Chop it!!! Thats way the hell down the road, but almost hate cutting her up. Also the thought of that job scares the hell out of me. I see myself screwing that job up.

absolutely awesome. Ive always wanted a 52-54ish bel air or something similar, and that one looks pristine despite the issues you listed.

Color is def growing on us. When looking at pictures, wife started talking about painting it...but in person, it looked great. She decided she wants to keep it as is. May look at painting the top white (with pearl or flake) just to make it stand out a bit more.

I've only driven it a couple of times for short distances...wife is making me ride bitch.

Got a good deal...again, needs work, but nothing major. Powerplant is great, no leaks, no smoke.

After a couple of days, the blinders are fading, and we're finding little things here and there that need to be addressed, but again, nothing major. Nothing that i can't do myself, and nothing that isn't expensive. The only expensive thing that needs to be done (more of a want, not a need) is redoing the interior. Nothing wrong with existing interior, just think we can make it better and purdier.

WIth a bit of money and work, i think it has easy potential for $15-20k. But i'm not worried about value. Its not going anywhere, wife loves it too much. Just like my '27...i want another car, was told to sell roadster and use that for another car....F' you!!! I'll be buried in that roadster.

it's cars like this that make you realise that the automotive industry lost its way somewhere around the late '80's.

it has soul and personality, and now what do we have? remote locking and an ipod dock.

Thats sick, and if she saw that, she'd want it - although its too shiny. She won't wax the car, and i won't do it for her. Needs satin paint. She wanted satin black with a purple flake top, but decided she likes this color. Don't think it'll change for a long while. Will have to consider painting it when i fix the rust in the door and quarter panel. She won't approve of driving around with primered patches for too long.

Completely agree...outside of exotics that you can't help but look at, there are very few modern cars that even remotely grab my attention. No soul or personality, just as you said.

Swear each of these cars has a soul. Sounds stupid, but they have their own temperment. Even get pissed off. I think my '27 got mad when it found out about the new car. Had a starter problem - thought it was solanoid, but ended up being starter - making me pull it and reinstall it twice. Then on my way home the other night, the throttle cable broke - luckily was carrying enough momentum to hop curb and get out of road. With nothing else to fix it with, i took my shoelace off, tied it to carb, ran it through window, and drove home operating the throttle by pulling on the shoe-string with my hand. Almost made it home too....made it to neighborhood, and stop sign right in front of my ally........before running out of gas. Apparently my fuel gauge decided to stick on me.

See....she's like a spoiled little brat who didn't want a new sibling to share its love and attention with.
