even if you make $30k a year you still have access to a shit load of very low interest rates to buy a house and have even better access to credit cards and all kinds of loans, it's not chaim kikeberg's fault at goldman sachs that you ran up a 100k CC debt buying stupid shit while he made a ridiculous bonus

Did you seriously link me to a feel-good website that compares income to that of 3rd world countries? Wow man.

May as well link me to humanworth.com and tell me that I'm actually worth 6 million because i don't smoke

Here's a clue: if I make 30k, I don't make it in Nigeria. Access to credit? great! That's better than borrowing form the neighbors because they're probably broke too. Amazing lack of logic on your part.

lolwut? don't understand the concept of purchasing power parity do we? 30k USD in nigeria is more than enough to buy you a farm with several acres of land...

access to cheap credit was exactly the reason home ownership was so easy for most boomers in the early '50s. or do you seriously think people were paying for every house and car they bought in cash?

even a 100 years ago credit was a fundamental and convenient way for a man to buy more land for his farm, or to expand his business, or to renovate his ranch...

That's like saying "stop complaining you get paid hardly anything, you can always borrow from the neighbors"
point is you have no idea what true poverty is. neither does your average "poor" american.

And you don't understand that I'm not in fucking Nigeria

And if I moved there I wouldn't be making 30k anymore.

Holly shit you're dense.. or drunk...

What?

It doesn't matter if you can get the loan, if you CAN'T PAY FOR IT...

Of course, no reason to make anything better just because "it could be worse". We can be like mexico and stagnate, hi5 bro.

And yes I don't know true poverty. I barely ever work, go to one class and live in a 4 bedroom house with a friend part of which is a 2 car garage where I park my BMW Not going to lie, I'm not really motivated to change much of that. Is it puzzling that I still care about people who slave away all day just to make ends meet?

If people around me are happier, I'm happier. Period! See if you can apply this to the situation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nash_equilibrium

Keep in mind if I made 18 million last quarter, making 12 the next shouldn't really make me UNhappy - unless I'm the greediest, saddest petty mother fucker alive. That extra money that I would have stowed away in a swiss bank would now be put to use repairing the very roads i drive on and educating the kids that would otherwise steal my shit. OR knowing that I would have to give some of it up anyway i may just increase my employee wages for improved company loyalty, morale and quality of labor.

Please try and see things this way....

how about mastering basic economic theory and the distinction between the various schools of thought and the history behind them before you start talking about the nash equilibrium

you probably watch documentaries on string theory but probably couldn't solve a high school physics problem if your life depended on it

I hope you don't mean me but there's a school of thought that politicians should be removed from the world's financial problems by being given very fair compensation.

This way they would be outside of financial influence and make altruistic decisions. This is nice in theory but we end up with fuckers who have the cake and eat the bribes too

I'm actually starting to lean towards the whole pay them well, rather than pay them nothing which was my previous stance in my younger days. (ie, they'd have 'real world experience' - I thnik it's more important to have smart and honest people as our leaders, and pay enough attention to the process so we actually end up with them!)

Which schools of thought do you want to debate? Let's go, it's kind of what I'm waiting for instead of this lame "we're fine it could be worse" and/or "you don't know what you're talking about" lines you're dishing out.

And I did just fine in highschool physics, I don't know what that has to do with anything though.

As usual there isn't really a good system to "solve" the inherent unfairness. Each system you can dream of has its flaws, and human nature has a tendency to exploit those flaws.

A Robin Hood system where the obscenely rich get buttfucked and the proceeds handed out to the poor doesn't work. The only reasonable thing that I could think of is to invest massively in education. Make it free for everyone poor and rich alike if necessary, and the capacity of top level education must be greatly increased. Invest in research, set up large ambitious programs (not unlike the space race though it would be more useful if there were more practical applications) and stop spending countless billions in military technology. I'm not against employing a large number of soldiers, but there seems to be a huge amount of "fat" that goes into the military industry.

The only thing that can work in the long term is to try and make people become slightly less stupid. Right now we seem to be going the other way. Of course we may already be past the tipping point where masses of people have become so stupid that it's impossible for any politician who would have valid ideas to improve society to get democratically elected and implement said ideas.

I wouldn't blame the rich themselves, they merely use the opportunities that come along. Most of those who are now "poor" would behave no different if the roles were reversed.

Some interesting graphs, the most recent points are several years old though but if anything it has gotten worse since then.

Of course not, but intuition tells me that outside of a few spoiled trust fund babies that wouldn't know what to do with themselves, and a few level headed poor people who were simply vicitims of circumstance.....it would be pretty much true if possible.
