I can fix the dope problem, too.

take all the seized dope, add some poison that takes 2 weeks to show symptoms, and is unstoppable, horribly painful death, like arsenic, and lay it all out on every street corner, for anyone to take. Anyone stupid enough and weak enough to take dope deserves to get gone from this earth. Ditto alchohol and tobacco, of course.

The government doesn't regulate illicit markets or products. The drug cartels are not submitting their products to the FDA for testing and/or quality control. That's the sort of thing legitimate companies in legitimate markets with rules and regulations do.

You need to legalize in order to regulate.

You need to legalize in order to regulate.

but you want to legalize the drugs. the next step would be heavy regulation. and you know that uncle sam will be taking his cut

and how can the government sit there and take taxes out of a product that kills and damages people (minus the drugs that you need a prescription from a doctor for)? new york wont even let you buy a large soda, how are they going to let you buy drugs legally?

Deregulate everything. Allow us to kill people who sell products that are proven to cause fatalities or serious injury, as discovered in a court of some sort. The caveat would be that if your proof is dubious, you get drawn and quartered. We're on our way to the medieval ages anyway, so why would this not work?

Seems to work just fine with alcohol and tobacco which kill like 50x the number of people illegal drugs do each year.

I'm all for them doing what they have done with cigarettes and using the tax money they get from those products to inform people of their dangers and dissuade people from doing them.

Yes. Every time they rank drugs by their actual harmfulness to society, alcohol is always at the top of the list.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/01...arm/index.html

Cigarettes kill more people in one year than illegal drugs have in pretty much the entire span of the drug war. More people die every year in our country from a lack of health care than from all drugs, legal and illegal*, combined.

*alcohol and cigarettes are usually broken out into their own separate categories because of the number of deaths they cause. In this case "all drugs" would be all drugs other than those two.

The fallacy of that is the fact that alcohol and cigs are legal and accessible to many more people than illegal drugs...so sure the numbers are going to be way higher. Also, not all illegal drugs are equal. There are those that can kill you just like alcohol/tobacco, and then others that can permanently alter your brain (see our very own dio/ry_goody) in ways that can make it hard to function in what is considered normal society. Of course the same could be said for some legal prescription drugs..

Personally, I think drugs that are currently illegal should either be decriminalized, (as in speeding ticket money for possession of small amounts) legalized and controlled/taxed or remain illegal on a case by case basis. The hard part is that not everyone will agree that drug A should be legal while drug B remains illegal...but it's a hell of a lot better than the "war on drugs" we have now, or simply legalizing anything and everything.
