"I believe in God"

We've all heard that line, but as of late I've started to think so much about what this means exactly.

The standard scientific rational atheist interpretation of the statement 'I believe in God' usually goes something along the lines of "they believe in a big man in the sky who makes everything and takes care of them".

But I don't think that is true. I think that is just an over exaggerated atheist description designed to attempt to highlight the absurdity of saying one believes in God. I don't think the word 'God' really conjures up an image of a large man floating in the sky for the vast majority of religious folk. I think the word 'God' conjures up something else, its referring to something else in their minds, probably a bit more abstract, and I've began to get curious, what is that thing?

When you hear the word 'God' what does that conjure up in your mind? Ideally I'd like a response from a religious person here, but I'd be interested to know what everyone thinks 'God' is.

God is a human construct which helps people deal with the fact that they are mortal.

but i mean, when a religious person heres the word 'god', what is that conjuring up in their mind?

I really don't think its image of a big man floating in the sky smiling at them... I think its something else, an abstract image, or thought or feeling. Thats what I am curious to find out, what does the word God actually conjure up in a believers mind?

I am not curious what you all (sr atheists) think god is, I am sure we all have the same exact thought and theory on what god 'literally' is, and really its common sense to us at this point. Rather, I am curious to see this subject through the religious person mind.

It's probably something a little different for everyone, but I think for most it doesn't mean an actual living, breathing man that lives in the clouds. That image is mostly from pop culture...and not just modern pop culture.

The concept of God provides people with the false hope that there is some sort of order and meaning in all the chaos and death we experience in life. It gives people hope that there is some sort of ultimate justice for all the injustice. The afterlife gives people hope for an existence beyond the pain and suffering of this life.

God is the ideal ultimate power which is supposed to save us from the hell we create for ourselves.

I think everyone here already agrees and knows this.

What I'm asking about is not the third party interpretation of God from an atheists mind, but what is the literal perception of it from a believers mind?

But then you have people of science (as in leading scientists of the world) who don't really believe all that you just said, but also won't go 100% atheist. The reason is that even if you believe the "big bang" is best explanation for how everything came to be....you still have the question of where did the ingredients for the big bang come from? The human mind isn't equipped to handle the concept of something that was just "always there" with no beginning..

But I'm wondering, is it even an image? Or is it even more abstract like a warm and fuzzy feeling?

correction, the western religious mind, and the descendants of such a mind are not equipped to understand the concept of 'always there'
