No shit... It's about the point where we need to send a hit man to his house and put him out of our misery.

but make work like this didn't play any part in high labor and operating costs?

The Twinkies bankruptcy is a classic example of costs created by labor unions that are not confined to paychecks.

The work rules imposed in union contracts required the company that makes Twinkies, which also makes Wonder Bread, to deliver these two products to stores in separate trucks. Moreover, truck drivers were not allowed to load these products into their trucks. And the people who did load Twinkies into trucks were not allowed to load Wonder Bread, and vice versa.

All of this was obviously intended to create more jobs for the unions' members. But the needless additional costs that these make-work rules created ended up driving the company into bankruptcy, which can cost 18,500 jobs. The union is killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

You dumb OMGOMGOMGOMG, we're talking about < $750M in labor costs (assuming a mean salary of $40k) for the entire 18,500 employees in a company making $2.5bn in revenue.

Hostess was strangled by market fucking forces, something your dumb republican ass should be jizzing your pants over. The company was too encumbered by debt to make money on an ongoing basis, so 1) it couldn't afford competitive wages for its workers, and 2) it went out of business. End of story.

No it wasn't, it was the communist marxist unions led by stalin, nothing can live under these oppressors

I wish my kids could go work in the coal mines for food, but no ...those fucking unions fuck everything up

I don't understand why people such as yourself have a problem not understanding why unions can't exist. The skills of labor such as factory work is nothing. No skills. Training takes 1 day max. Yet... you think they should be paid $40k+ a year like the union had going for them?

What the fuck are you smoking? As I said, factory work and general retail labor is not skillful - not skillful pay is defined by minimum wage. What is your answer to that? As I said, I have no problems or qualms if they are protesting to the government asking to raise minimum wage, but they are bitching to their employer. Unless you are disagreeing that retail work isn't the least skillful positions, in which I ask of you - what is a minimum wage job?

Not to mention, unions always protect them regardless of how slow they are going. Yet - there is 20 people lined up to take their place, but they can't because the union is protecting them from being fired. This defeats every single purpose of what this economy is based off of - which is general capitalism - supply and demand.

how do you expect anyone who is paid X amount of dollars to take a massive pay cut and still 1. be loyal to their employer and 2. want to keep their job? be realistic.

Our roommate who lives here was talking about something similar, except 50x more embarassing

She was meeting with someone at a job interview that had a union - and apparently she said she spilled her coffee all over the desk/floor they were meeting at. She obviously did was natural and was like "oh noez! I'll run and get some towels to clean it up!".... except the person she was meeting with said NO STOP!! They called in a janitor to come clean it up as the janitor says "It's Okay! It's okay!"

Wow, just wow

Thats just it - I DONT expect them to be loyal - hence looking for another job. Why does everyone still believe in fantasies where people are loyal to their company for 25+ years? That used to exist, but clearly for the last 20 years it doesn't anymore.

yet when all of those people go on strike and the company goes out of business theyre just whiney liberals with no sense of reality... its no different than if they had outright quit though. which means the company tried to fuck its employees, the employees said no, the company no longer exists and the people running the company are still the most responsible.

Yes, because a complete cease of work strike would have happened without the union

How did that Black Friday strike work out for Walmart workers?

The union had it's members vote on whether or not to accept the offer. 92% said NO.

It wasn't just "the union" making decisions. The workers decided nearly unanimously not to accept the offer.

And there's no saying the company would have survived even if they did say yes.

A company with greedy leadership and a shitty, dated product finally fails. Surprise.

Dear republicans - the work force is part of those market forces you believe always balance out. Why didn't it balance out? Maybe Mittens can buy it up and "build it himself" by making all the bread and Twinkies in China.

No pesky unions there, just good old fashioned slave labor.
